TIM ALLAN

PRESIDENT

SCOTTISH CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

My main focus as President is to lobby politicians and to consult with our members, taking that information to our policy-makers both in Holyrood and Westminster, making sure they are listening to what business needs.  Scotland has to be competitive… we cannot have a differential that means it’s punitive to do business in Scotland, otherwise we’ll lose out on investment.  We are constantly  speaking to government about ensuring that we remain competitive at all levels.”

In 2010 Tim was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion, and is a fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.

He is a Founder and Director of Motor Fuel Group (MFG), the largest UK forecourt operator with more than 950 petrol stations operating under the BP, Shell, Texaco and Jet fuel brands.  Tim sits on the board of MFG, which is chaired by the Scottish serial entrepreneur, Alasdair Locke, and includes former Tesco boss Sir Terry Leahy. MFG acquired the UK’s leading independent fuel retailer, MRH, in a £1.2 billion deal in February 2018.

Tim joined the Board of Directors of Archangel Investors in March 2019. Archangel was formed in 1992 and based in Edinburgh, Archangels is a prominent business angel syndicate which has been at the forefront of early stage investing in Scotland for more than a quarter of a century.  David Ovens, Chief Operating Officer of Archangel was runner-up in the WeDO Scotland 2019 Intrapreneur of the Year Award.

Additionally, Tim is Founder and Chief Executive of Unicorn Property Group, an award winning Scottish property business with a commercial and residential portfolio across the country.  Established in 2005, Unicorn is involved in the regeneration of Dundee’s waterfront. and He is also Chairperson of the Victoria & Albert Museum of Design

A member of the Scottish committee of the BIG Lottery Fund for seven years, Tim studied history at the University of St Andrews, where he is now a Member of Court, before setting off to Sandhurst for the military part of his career,  where he served for 10 years, the latter two which were spent as equerry to the Duke of York.

After leaving the army, Tim spent seven years in private-wealth management, working for Citigroup and UBS with top UK entrepreneurs. He is a passionate advocate of internationalisation, one of his key goals while SCC president.

Scotland does not do enough trade abroad. We really lag behind.”
