We are delighted to be welcoming?Pete Higgins?of?UWI Technology, Winner of the?Scottish Enterprise Life Science Award for Innovation 2012?as guest speaker?at our second Spotlight Dinner of 2013, taking place on the 10th of April. ?This is a members only event, members can log in to book tickets here.
Pete is the inventor of the UWI Label and founder and CEO of?UWI Technology, spearheading the label?s development since its inception in 2007. Having personally funded the progression and development of the UWI Label up to 2011, Pete went on to secure the early stage investment required for a successful?SMART:SCOTLAND Feasibility Award. Shortly after raising this initial angel investment, UWI went on to win Barclay?s bank?Take One Small Step?national business competition along with??50k prize money.
More recently, Pete has successfully raised over??600k?for the next stage of the UWI Label?s important development, with??250k coming from the?Scottish Investment Bank SEED Fund?and the balance from a US based angel syndicate. Not only is this a?first?for a Scottish based startup company to receive investment from an angel syndicate from the US, but UWI is also the first company to receive the?full??250k?from SIB?s SEED Fund in one tranche.
Whilst still a young company, Pete and his team have been successful in recognition of the UWI Label?s ground breaking innovative technology resulting in winning many prestigious awards. These have included one from?Zero Waste Scotland for Food and Drink?and more recently?Scottish Enterprise?s Life Science Award for Innovation.
After training as an Architect, Pete worked in two of Scotland?s largest award winning architectural practices culminating in running a successful in-house graphics and presentation department. He went on to oversee the combined operations of an architectural visualisation company with offices in Edinburgh, Manchester and London, before setting up his own multi award winning animation and multi-media company in 2001. The success of this business was instrumental in Pete being able to fund the UWI Label?s early stage development.
In the label?s infancy, Pete was a winning participant of the Starter for 6 programme and has acted as a business mentor to participating companies in subsequent years, which have all gone on to win funding from the programme. Pete is frequently asked to give talks about his roller coaster journey with the UWI Label and always happy to share his experiences with like-minded entrepreneurs.
