CLAIRE DE FRANCK of CLAIRE MACLACHLAN COPYWRITING LTD

What was your first job after leaving school/further education?

PR Account Executive at Atlantic PR in Edinburgh.

When did you start your business & what prompted you to do it?

July 2020. After years in PR and Events, I was desperate for a change and found the ideal new career in copywriting. It offered me a fantastic opportunity to be my own boss and pursue my love of writing and working with exciting and varied clients.

What have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced to date?

Finding new business especially in these difficult economic times and raising awareness of Claire Maclachlan Copywriting.

Copywriting as with other areas of marketing is often the first to be affected by budget restraints, so convincing people to spend money on it and view it as essential for their business has been a challenge.

How did you overcome them?

Proactively putting myself out there and saying yes as often as I can to opportunities to raise my profile and that of Claire Maclachlan Copywriting, whether that be with networking events, speaking opportunities or guest blogs. These not only have helped raise my profile and forge valuable connections but also helped to educate business owners as to the value that a professional copywriter can bring.

What would you do differently now looking back?

Not wait as long to just do it! Being my own boss, meeting amazing and inspiring people whether others in business or clients and loving what I do has just been fantastic and I cannot wait for this chapter in my life to develop.

What or who has helped you to grow your business the most?

The positive and supportive people I have met whether it be through online or in-person networking; word of mouth support or those who have just offered much-needed advice and encouragement.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Getting the business properly up and running during lockdown, whilst moving back to the UK from Australia and settling the family into a brand new community here in East Lothian.

What are the future plans for your business?

To continue to learn and develop my skills as a copywriter to provide the best service for my clients; build my business brand and be known as a true expert in my field.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to set up their own business? 100% go for it! It may be stressful and scary at times, but the good times will keep you going and remind you why you made the decision in the first place.

Tell us something about you that isn’t commonly known.

I was Editor of a family paper in Perth, Western Australia just before we returned to the UK in 2020.

And finally, why did you join WeDO?

To meet new, inspiring and like-minded people who support and learn from one another and get to do it at exciting and engaging events!
