What was your first job after leaving school/further education?

My first job was working for His Grace The Duke of Roxburghe as an Assistant Manager at The Roxburghe Hotel and Golf Course in Kelso in the Scottish Borders.

When did you start your business & what prompted you to do it?

I formed the first of my companies in September 2008.? A member of my family passed away and I realized that there was more to life than slogging your guts out for someone else and I wanted a new lease of life and to work for myself.? The BEST decision I have ever made!

What did you find most challenging at the beginning?

Getting recognized and taken seriously about what I wanted to do. Having gone from a successful hospitality background then into the events and entertainment industry was a bit of a change and a huge challenge to make the right contacts and bring in the big events I dreamed of doing.

Who did you ask for advice & why did you choose them?

The first people I asked for advice was my family.? They were all so supportive of my decision and have given me so much motivation and encouragement. ?I could not have achieved what I have without them by my side.

How did you fund your business?

I started up with the cash I got when I sold my flat.? Selling my flat was to help fun the purchase of a ?500k house I wanted to turn into a boutique B&B, the deal fell through so I used the money to get me going with PDF.

What would you do differently now looking back?

I would not have done anything differently, I have learned so much about ?the industry and myself over the last four years, I change as I go and am not shy to ask for advice from the right professionals.? The experience I have gained is massive and now know in many ways what works and what doesn?t.

What or who has helped you to grow your business the most?

Without sounding gushy, again, my family have helped so much along the way. I recently joined forces with my new co-director Denis Coyne who invested in my company has great belief in what I do, in return he has offered my huge support in all manners of running the company.

What have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced?

My biggest challenges have been establishing myself throughout Scotland as an outstanding events company and making an impression on my competitors, acquiring new clients in a very closed-knit community within events. Early on during the quieter months, managing cash-flow effectively has proven a challenge.

What are the future plans for your business?

My plans are to employ a team of people to support the growth of the business and to become one of Scotland?s leading event companies.? One goal I have it to get the contract to manage Edinburgh Hogmanay Festival.? An event I REALLY want to have a shot at!

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to set up their own business?

If you have the urge to do it?. DO IT!? Probably one of the best decisions I have ever made and have absolutely no regrets even through the hard time.? Be in charge of your own destiny and give it all you have.

Tell us something about you that isn’t commonly known.

I have an obsession with medical dramas on the television.? My week is not complete without Casualty and Holby City!

And finally, why did you join WeDO?

Having heard of the benefits that WeDo offer businesses there was no other thought needed..? Belinda has got to be one of the most encouraging people I have ever met while running my own business and I wanted a piece of the action!? Great opportunities for networking and establishing my business in the capital.? Proud to be a member!
