Member Profile Interview – Andrew Houston of McHardy Group
ANDREW HOUSTON of WISHART WEALTH MANAGEMENT
a McHardy Group Company – WeDO Corporate Members
What was your first job after leaving school/further education?
Cocktail Mixologist in Glasgow bar. Late nights, free drinks, and weekly cash in-hand – the perfect student combo!
Why did you decide to join your current company & what makes you most proud about what they do?
To be part of the client-focused culture and the independent nature of our planning. I am most proud of our commitment to the highest levels of professional excellence as a Chartered firm.
Explain your role within the company.
I am a Financial Planner dedicated to helping clients get and keep the life they want. My role as an adviser is to provide clarity and peace of mind and to coach clients at every stage of their financial life.
What do you enjoy most about it?
I enjoy the variety. Each client brings a completely new story, and set of values and goals, and therefore each financial plan is completely individual and bespoke.
What type of clients do you work with?
We service a full spectrum of individuals but work mostly with business owners and those approaching retirement. This is the demographic for which in-depth financial planning can be most valuable.
What is of most importance to you in the services you offer to your clients?
That my clients know I am on the same side of the table as them and experience that in practice.
What have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced?
The multitude of adviser tech solutions. It is critical not to get distracted by the new tool of the week and keep the focus firmly on what clients value the most – the realisation of their goals, financial or otherwise!
Which entrepreneur inspires you the most?
Andrew Carnegie – an early pioneer in the philanthropic donation of wealth.
Tell us something about you that isn’t commonly known.
Highland tour guide in a past life!
And finally, why did you join WeDO?
To play a part in the success of our thriving business community here in Edinburgh & beyond.
